Day 2 - Sprints and Race Finishes

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Day 2 saw us riding past the Golden Gate bridge into the Marin Headlands.  Absolutely gorgeous views of the city, bay and surrounding coast line along with one of the steepest descents around.

Golden Gate Bridge

Campers were provided technique instruction before performing small and big ring sprints uphill, on the flats and down hill against one another for extra motivation. We would regroup afterwards to go over any suggestions we had for them after watching them sprint.

We then broke up the men and women into separate groups and practiced lead out trains, working on delivering their sprinter to the line safely and quickly. We finished by breaking into two teams and racing each other several times to work on tactics and strategies to get their team to the line first. This is a very physically as well as mentally challenging set of drills that helps them become better racers during crunch time.

We climbed back to base camp and enoyed some coffee at Cibo cafe in Sausalito before heading home for food, a stretching session and much needed naps and massages. Sprint day marks the first day of the beginning of fatigue accumulation which will only be heightened by tomorrow’s race up Mt. Tam.

Thank goodness for great massage therapists and the amazing food we have here at the retreat. Another rgeat day in the books!

Mt. Tam Hill Climb Day 3

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Day 3 Route GPX file: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=109176

Well, I didn’t beat Justin England’s record. BIG SURPRISE! ;-) But we did all have a great time suffering like dogs up Mt Tam. Like the true idiot I am, I attacked everyone at the base only to get dropped like a hot potato to suffer alone the rest of the way up.

Mt. Tam Hill Climb Course link

Specialized MTB pro, Chris Peariso took the honors at the top, closely followed by Veloshop’s Stephen Hunter and local boy Jeff Sigman, then yours truly. PR’s were set by many of the campers, even in a state of fatigue, and on a chilly Nor Cal day.

Mt Tam file

I averaged 300w for the 37 min climb which matches my peak fitness of years ago. Not bad for an old man. A definite sign of good things to come. (See file above)

The effort sure put a sting in most of our legs, making lunch and post ride massages that much more appealing and necessary. The campers conitnued their recovery with a Yoga class while we downloaded power files to review with them after dinner.

All in all, another amazing day here in Marin. What a great camp! Tomorrow we ride the Alpine Dam loop to help recover and prepare the legs for our 100 mile finale on Saturday. Here’s to another good night’s sleep!

Camp Begins - Day 1

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Today camp officially began with a 3 hour, shake down ride over Mt. Tam to the coast and back up Muir Woods climb.

Day 2 GPX file: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=109171

We were treated to another beautiful, sunny, 70+ degree day and great riding. 4,000 ft of climbing over a mere 40 miles.

peloton forest

Campers cruised through what has been termed the Ewok forest climb, then on to Mt. Tam to do 5 min (vo2 max power) testing and along Stinson beach for 1 min (Anaerobic Capacity) testing. MTB pro, Chris Peariso crushed all comers!

peloton climb

We finished by ascending Muir Woods road, a 30 min climb at an avg grade of around 10%, en route to the best part of the ride…coffee at The Depot in down town Mill Valley.

We were treated to an incredible lunch upon our arrival before getting massages and doing Yoga. We finished out day with an amazing meal of wild Sockeye salmon, rice asparagus, salad and fresh strawberry cobbler. A great start to camp indeed! Time for some much needed rest as sprint day and race finish scenarios await. Sleep tight!

Marin Day 3 - Paradise Loop

Preparation for camp on day 3 went according to plan and we got in another great ride. Coaches AK and Jeb did a nice 2.5 hour spin around the Paradise Loop and took in breath taking views of the surrounding bay area.

Marin Camp Day 2

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Gretings from Fairfax, CA!

Day two of prep for camp is going extremely well and we are blessed with more blue skies and warm weather. Getting geared up for another beautiful spin along Paradise Loop.

Ralston White retreat Center

We dropped supplies off where we will be staying and I was treated to a nice surprise of how wonderful our accomodations are. We will be staying at the Ralston White Retreat Center on Mt. Tamalpais. Amazing place that will be an incredible backdrop and base for our camp. However, the 20 min, 8% grade climb back to the center every day will certainly test the legs.

Time to go for a ride. Check back in later for photos from today’s spin.

Marin Camp Trip Day 1

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Down Town SFLanded in SFO Thu night and was happy to get the first good night’s I’ve had in weeks. Awoke to the crisp, cool air of northern California. Haven’t been here since I came out to chase my pro skateboarding dream in 1991 and boy is it bringing back memories. Love the diversity of the population, the outdoor cafes, the public transport and European feel of the city.

Enjoyed a ride on the Bart to down town to have lunch on the Embarcadero before hopping a ferry across the bay to Sausalito in Marin county, one of the most beautiful places around with some of the best riding on the planet.East Bay Climb

Adnan picked me up and we sped (literally) off to the east bay, where we opened the legs on a great spin in the east hills. Great climbs with awesome views of the bay. Ended the day with a pizza and desert party among friends of our hosts, Jeff and Shabnam, all teachers at a local college, which provided for some great conversation.

Of course I (the east coaster still on east coast time) passed out on the couch in the middle of post-dinner conversation. Dreaming of tomorrow’s ride in the hills of Marin overlooking the bay on old country roads with lots of climbing and descending. Ahhhh! Good night!
